Usually you can have 4 people staying in a hotel room, so to recoup some of the money and make it cheaper the person booking the room offers a spot in the room for 1/4th the price. However I forgot you’re doing the VIP thing lol.

Always budget a lot extra if you're planning to put a hotel room on the bank card.

Rule of thumb, whatever the room is advertised as, make sure you have at least double that in your bank account ready to go.

Otherwise you might get checked in and wonder why you don't even have enough money to buy a cup of cheap ramen...

There are open staff positions but they lack descriptions. Is there any more information available? With the volunteer drought I doubt I will run out of things to do like ANE 2020 but I do prefer staffing as it guarantees I can do my favorite convention activity which is working.

I've staffed dealers and masquerade. I have volunteered for set-up, take down, pack out, badge checking, and registration. I find security intimidating because it is unknown to me for the most part. It's not just about maintaining a presence, keeping people safe, there's incident response, triage, and paperwork.

There are a couple of different things security does at a con. First there is access control. Checking for badges for access to places like dealers room, art show, or other convention spaces.
Next is crowd control. Basically anyplace there is a big line or heavy crowds. Again access control, VIP escort, dealing with line jumpers and other unruly induhviduals.
Party patrol. Going around the hotel in the evenings and dealing with any problems they can. Mostly asking loud parties to quiet down and calling hotel security or police for bigger problems.

If one is appropriately licensed in that state, they might also render medical assistance to those in need. There is also dealing with folks who have over imbibed on mind altering chemistry. This could be just helping them find their hotel room to go to sleep, or calling the police to get them taken to jail.

Having a thick skin and not visibly reacting to morons shouting vile insults at you because you asked them not to vandalize the hotel is a useful trait.

One the second or third day of the con, you may also have to deal with the people who think the 621 rule doesn't apply to them. They haven't eaten anything but chips and beer since they arrived at the con, and the only sleep they got was when they were passed out drunk. They are crashing hard and often need medical assistance.

And once in a great while, you end up doing things like guiding the local swat team, or explaining to the fire department just how that sprinkler head got yanked out of the ceiling of the hotel room, fending off a kidnapping attempt, trying to stop the bagpipers from playing at 3am, or doing CPR on the guest of Honor.

Ah yes, volunteering for security!
It is definitely a different kind of department from some of the others. Requires the ability to communicate under pressure, maintain a proper decorum with those around you regardless of the situation, be compassionate and caring and no matter how busy you are, making time to talk with every person who needs your attention regardless of the size or nature of the issue at hand.
